CA Foundation is challenging because it asks you to switch between written answers, calculations and objective questions. It is not a test of who can stay awake longest. A beginner can prepare well by using the official material first, practising often and adjusting a timetable to school, college and travel.
Who should start preparing now?
Start if you have completed, or are approaching, Class 12 and can protect regular study blocks. B.Com students can start too; they simply need a calendar that respects semester examinations. You do not need to be the strongest school-accounting student. You do need patience with corrections: one error notebook can improve a weak topic faster than repeatedly reading it.
Subjects: what each one asks of you
- Accounting: concepts become dependable only after written sums and working notes.
- Business Laws: learn the rule, apply the facts, then write a clear conclusion in your own words.
- Quantitative Aptitude: practise Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Statistics in timed sets. ICAI’s current module list is available on its Quantitative Aptitude study-material page.
- Business Economics: make compact concept-and-diagram notes, then test yourself with MCQs and explanations.
Six-month CA Foundation study plan
| Month | Topics and practice | Revision | Mocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the official module map. Begin basic accounting and one laws unit; add short QA/Economics sessions. | Sunday recall of formulas, definitions and errors. | One diagnostic chapter test. |
| 2 | Build accounting routines; continue laws; complete a first QA and Economics unit. | Revise Month 1 before starting new work each week. | Two subject tests. |
| 3 | Finish roughly half the syllabus in every paper. Start written law answers. | Make one-page chapter sheets. | One timed half-paper per subject. |
| 4 | Complete first learning cycle and all module illustrations/questions selected by your teacher. | Repair weak chapters first. | One full paper every week. |
| 5 | Second revision; previous questions, RTPs/MTPs when issued for your attempt. | Daily formula, law-rule and error-book review. | Two full papers weekly, spaced out. |
| 6 | Exam simulation, targeted repair and concise final notes. | Two quick revisions, not a new textbook. | Timed papers with honest analysis. |
Three-month intensive plan
Use this only when you already have basic coverage or can study consistently. In Weeks 1–4, finish a first pass of the syllabus while solving examples the same day. Weeks 5–8 are for the official module questions, written laws practice and chapter tests. Weeks 9–12 are for two revision cycles and full papers. If a major chapter is still untouched in the final month, reduce mock volume briefly, learn it properly, then return to tests.
A realistic daily and weekly timetable
A college student might use 90 minutes in the morning for a numerical subject, 60–90 minutes after college for theory or MCQs, and 20 minutes at night to recall what was studied. A school student may prefer two 75-minute blocks after school. On Sunday, spend one block on the week’s errors and one on a timed test. Keep one lighter half-day for rest, family or catch-up. The right number of hours is the number you can repeat while retaining the work—not a number copied from somebody else’s routine.
Subject-wise strategy
Accounting
Read an illustration, close the solution and reproduce it. Mark where the entry, treatment or working note broke. Re-solve mistakes after two days and again after a week. Neat working notes make your thinking easier to follow.
Business Laws
For each answer, use a repeatable structure: issue, relevant rule, application to the facts and conclusion. Do not spend hours memorising section numbers at the cost of understanding. Build a small rule bank from the current ICAI module and write at least a few answers each week.
Quantitative Aptitude
Maintain a formula sheet, but make it active: cover it and recreate it. Practise in short timed sets. For objective questions, record why each wrong option tempted you. Follow the current attempt’s instructions for objective questions instead of relying on old social-media advice.
Business Economics
Link definitions to examples—a price change, a market structure, a household choice. Use diagrams only after you understand what they show. Complete MCQs with a reason, not a guess.
Use ICAI material, revision and mocks well
Download the applicable modules, revision test papers and mock papers from ICAI’s student resources. Start with module illustrations and questions before collecting multiple books. For every mock, note four things: unfinished questions, concept errors, careless errors and time errors. The next week’s timetable should answer that list.
Common mistakes
- Finishing lectures without writing or solving anything.
- Leaving Laws writing until the last week.
- Taking mocks without checking them.
- Changing resources whenever a chapter feels difficult.
- Planning a 12-hour day and abandoning it after three days.
Managing B.Com with CA Foundation
During college exams, keep CA in maintenance mode: 30–45 minutes of formula recall, MCQs or one small law answer. After the semester, move the missed blocks into a recovery week rather than trying to double every day. See our B.Com plus professional-course guide for a fuller timetable.
When coaching can help
Coaching can be useful if you need a fixed routine, explanation of difficult concepts, answer feedback or a test schedule. Before joining, ask about batch timings, paper coverage, doubt support and test feedback. Students looking for offline CA coaching in Kolkata can ask Sudhir Rai Classes about batches at Girish Park, Dum Dum or Tollygunge; select a centre based on your commute and timetable.
FAQs
Is CA Foundation difficult for a beginner?
It is manageable for a beginner who learns concepts, solves regularly and revises; a commerce background helps but is not a substitute for practice.
Should I choose a 3-month or 6-month plan?
Choose six months for a first, relaxed learning cycle or a busy college schedule. Choose three months only if you can protect consistent study blocks and have some foundation already.
How many hours should I study daily?
There is no universal number. Track output: questions solved, answers written, recall and mock review. Increase gradually when quality stays sound.
Can I prepare with B.Com?
Yes. Keep professional study lighter around university exams and plan a recovery week afterwards.
Are old notes enough for 2027?
Use old notes only as support. Check the applicable ICAI material and notices for your attempt.
Where should I get mock papers?
Start with ICAI’s official study resources and papers applicable to your attempt.
